Jaguar D-Type XKD 551: A Rare Unraced 1956 Masterpiece

Jaguar D-Type XKD 551

The Jaguar D-Type XKD 551 is not just a classic – it’s a preserved piece of motorsport history that has never turned a wheel in competition. As one of only 71 examples built, this short-nose D-Type stands out for its originality, its pristine condition, and its unique life away from the track.

A Rare Short-Nose Survivor

Manufactured in 1956, XKD 551 left the factory destined for private ownership rather than the racing circuit. Sold in October 1957, it received subtle XKSS-style modifications, including a passenger door and a full-width windscreen. These changes gave it a unique look while keeping its performance potential intact.

From Collectors to Racing Icons

Ownership passed in 1963 to Hon. James Dawnay, known for his Aston Martin DBR1/1, before finding its way to Australian Formula 1 driver Paul Hawkins. Although it spent time with motorsport personalities, the D-Type’s life remained focused on preservation rather than competition.

Returning to Original Glory

In the 1970s, the car was restored to its original configuration, shedding its XKSS-style features. By 1994, it found a long-term home with its current Swiss owner. During this time, the original XK inline-six engine was carefully removed for preservation and later rebuilt to as-new condition. Recently reunited with its original powerplant, XKD 551 has been fully serviced by Swiss specialists Graber Sportgarage.

Power and Performance Heritage

The D-Type’s legendary 3.4-liter XK inline-six engine, paired with its aerodynamic short-nose body, was built to dominate endurance racing. While XKD 551 never saw the green flag, its mechanical heart retains all the pedigree and capability of its race-winning siblings. This makes it a prime candidate for prestigious historic events such as the Goodwood Revival and Le Mans Classic.

Eligible for Iconic Events

Alongside its mechanical excellence, the car comes with FIA and FIVA documentation, making it eligible for the most celebrated historic racing gatherings worldwide. It offers a rare chance to experience the essence of a factory-built D-Type without the wear and tear of competition history.
