1951 Abarth-Simca 8 Sport Cabriolet: A One-Off Masterpiece

1951 Abarth-Simca 8 Sport Cabriolet

The 1951 Abarth-Simca 8 Sport Cabriolet by Stabilimenti Farina is a one-of-a-kind creation that blends post-war Italian craftsmanship with French engineering and Abarth performance. Commissioned by California sportsman Roger Barlow, this elegant cabriolet was designed to turn heads on the street while offering spirited performance worthy of its racing pedigree.

A Coachbuilt Work of Art

Stabilimenti Farina’s design shares visual DNA with the legendary Cisitalia 202, featuring graceful “envelope” body lines and a mix of steel and aluminum panels. Special touches include aluminum bumpers, triple side vents on each fender, and a functional hood scoop reminiscent of Farina-bodied Ferraris. “Extra Lusso” badging reinforces its luxurious touring intent.

Built for a Hollywood Racer

Roger Barlow, known for his International Motors dealership and clientele that included Hollywood stars, wanted a stylish yet capable road car. Using the Simca 8 chassis as a foundation, the car combined European elegance with California flair.

Supercharged Performance

Under the hood, the 1,221-cc inline-four received a full performance makeover. An Abarth-modified head and exhaust were paired with a substantial Weber carburetor and an S.Co.T supercharger, pushing output to an estimated 90–100 horsepower. This was paired with a four-speed floor-shift manual gearbox, delivering lively acceleration and a rewarding driving experience.

Ownership and Restoration

Barlow kept the car until his passing in 1990, after which it remained with his family before undergoing a mid-2010s restoration. Finished in a two-tone scheme over a red interior, it was later repainted in a deep blue by Sam and Emily Mann, who noted its speed and pleasant road manners.

Driving Character

Four-wheel hydraulic brakes and independent front suspension give the cabriolet a confident, responsive feel. This makes it ideal not only for display but also for spirited touring, where its blend of style, comfort, and performance can be fully enjoyed.
